Bathroom Layout Planning: Clearances, Door Swings & Working Zones

A beautifully styled bathroom can quickly become frustrating to use if you cannot open a vanity drawer fully, or if your knees hit the shower glass when sitting on the toilet. Successful bathroom renovation starts with spatial zoning and respecting standard human clearances before ordering your fixtures.

1. The Three Essential Bathroom Zones

Group your fixtures into logical working zones to maintain intuitive circulation and plumbing efficiency:

• The Vanity & Grooming Zone: Typically positioned near the bathroom entrance for quick handwashing and mirror access. Needs excellent task lighting and side drawer clearance.
• The Shower & Bath Wet Zone: Placed at the farthest end of the room or adjacent to external windows to keep floor splashing contained and simplify floor falls to waste.
• The Toilet Zone: Ideally screened from direct sightline when the bathroom door stands open.

2. Essential Trade Clearances to Check

• In front of the vanity: Maintain at least 700mm to 800mm of clear standing space between the front of your vanity and opposite fixtures. Verify that drawers can fully extend without colliding with shower screens or towel rails.
• Around the toilet pan: Allow at least 200mm clearance on both sides of the toilet pan for comfortable elbow room and easy cleaning. Ensure at least 600mm of clear space in front of the bowl.
• Shower enclosures: A standard comfortable walk-in shower should be at least 900mm wide by 1200mm long. In compact bathrooms, an 800mm × 800mm curved or corner-entry screen can work where space is constrained.

3. Work Around Fixed In-Slab Plumbing

Moving a sewer stack or main floor waste through a concrete suspended slab can cost thousands in core-drilling, engineering approvals, and structural certification. If you are working with an existing layout, keep your major waste outlets in their original locations and update the fixtures with modern, flexible-setout models.
