Renovating a compact ensuite, powder room, or apartment bathroom presents unique spatial challenges. In small rooms, every 50 millimetres of floor space and visual depth counts. By choosing fixtures designed to maximise visible floor area and eliminate benchtop clutter, you can make even a 1.8m × 1.8m bathroom feel luxurious and serene.

1. Float the Vanity with a Wall-Hung Design

Floor visibility trick: when your eye can see the floor tiles extending all the way to the wall, your brain perceives the room as substantially larger.

• A wall-hung floating vanity elevates the cabinet 300mm–350mm above the floor, creating an airy, weightless aesthetic.
• Look for slim-depth designs (e.g. 400mm–460mm front-to-back depth) to preserve vital walking space between the vanity and shower screen.
• Consider a curve-corner or rounded gable vanity to prevent hip-height bumps in tight doorways.

2. Recess a Mirrored Shaving Cabinet into the Wall Cavity

In a small bathroom, items left sitting on the vanity benchtop quickly create visual noise and clutter:

• Have your builder create a timber framed opening in the stud wall to recess your shaving cabinet so it sits almost flush with the wall tiles.
• You gain deep, multi-tier storage for toothbrushes, skincare, medicines, and shavers without encroaching onto your benchtop or mirror viewing space.

3. Choose a Frameless Walk-In Shower Panel

Heavy, framed shower doors and chunky aluminium extrusions visually chop a small bathroom in half. A single piece of 10mm toughened frameless glass creates a seamless, uninterrupted view across the entire room, allowing light to bounce freely from wall to wall.

4. Select a Short-Projection Back-to-Wall Toilet

Standard toilet suites project 650mm to 700mm out from the wall. For tight ensuites and powder rooms, look for a compact projection toilet suite (590mm to 620mm projection). Saving 80mm of knee clearance makes a noticeable difference to comfort and door opening swing.
